Joseph was a baker and flour dealer at 240 Moorfields, Sheffield. In 1849 the family moved from Sheffield to Ecclesfield and later Hunshelf, Penistone where Joseph worked the corn mill. After leaving school, William was employed by his father in the mill until the age of 23.

Lavinia died at the age of 42 from cancer of the breast leaving Joseph with a baby and other young children. Although he lived for another 26 years after Lavinia's death, Joseph never remarried.

By 1871 Joseph was back in Sheffield as a Baker at 239 Allen Street where he stayed until his death in 1879. Joseph died of heart disease and is buried at Christ Church, Stannington. His son, Joseph, continued at the bakery into the 1880s but by 1891 he was working as a general labourer.
